Viele Ameisenarten leben mit pflanzensaugenden Insekten in Symbiose und somit in gegenseitiger Abhängigkeit. Hauptsächlich sind das phloemsaugende Schildläuse (Coccoidea), Blattläuse (Aphidoidea) und Blattflöhe (Psylloidea). Phloem ist reich an Kohlenhydraten, enthält aber nur sehr wenig Protein. Phloemsauger verbrauchen deshalb nur circa zehn Prozent der Kohlenhydrate; der Überschuss wird als zuckerreicher Honigtau -- wichtigste Kohlenhydratquelle der Ameisen -- ausgeschieden. Die Ameisen „melken" die Blattsauger und bewachen sie im Gegenzug vor Fressfeinden. Manche Ameisenarten lassen die Blattläuse in ihrem Nest überwintern oder tragen deren Eier in ihr Nest, um sie vor Kälte zu schützen. Vom Regen fortgespülte Larven werden von den Ameisen gesucht und zurückgeholt.
Manche Ameisen suchen gezielt nach Blattsaugern und versetzen sie auf von den Pflanzensaugern bevorzugte Pflanzen. Wird eine Herde zu groß, so treiben oder tragen die Ameisen die Läuse oder deren Eier zu einer neuen Pflanze. Es wurden Kriege zwischen verschiedenen Ameisenstaaten beobachtet, in denen um die Vorherrschaft über Läuseherden gekämpft wurde.
